Sermon

God's Power Cannot Be Ignored
Psalm 76
by Pastor Clinton Macomber

God is real, and He is always to be found working among mankind. The Scriptures point out how ridiculous it is to think there is no God. He created the world in just six days, without having to go through a trial and error. He spoke the word and the world was flooded, to the extent no animal or person on land survived, except those in the Ark. God showed that the Egyptian idea of God, is completely ill-conceived. There is no animal or bug or concept that can shield a person from the judgment and power of God. There is also no human army that can conquer His people. God showed that a desert can provide food enough to sustain millions of Jewish refuges, and water can flow like a river from a rock. Even sin cannot be hidden from God. Achan tried to hide forbidden loot from Jericho under his tent floor, and God kept the Israelites from being able to win battles until his sin was found out and exposed. Before him, God showed that worship is never to be tampered with, but it is to remain the simple, humble means. All changes are not accepted by God. Cain as a result was not blessed, because he sought to invent his own system of worship. Nadab and Abihu were struck and killed by fire for trying to offer their own special incense. God knows all things, has all power, and is everywhere. The created cannot escape the Creator.

The Presence of God is in Israel

God is Well-Known to Israel

Psalm 76:1 In Judah is God known: his name is great in Israel.

If you want to learn about the power and greatness of God, you will find your answers in the land of Israel. God has been at work there for almost 4,000 years. It may be that the land was important and sacred before the flood as well. God created this land to be the center of the world. He has chosen a people to implant in the land. Everything He has done has been in miraculous power and glory.

The verse begins with the common word, know , which is to learn through observation and reflection on what has happened. The point being, when a person stops to consider what has happened to Israel and in Israel, they will realize quite a bit about God and his love and justice.

1 Chronicles 28:9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.

This shows how important attitude is in learning about God. If you are stubborn, bitter, and resistant to seeing the work of God, the blindness of such foolishness is permitted during this time. If you are willing to find God, and put effort into it, you will see His handiwork everywhere. Soon there will be no doubt that He is real and evidences His power.

The example of a hardened heart toward God is evidenced in Pharaoh. Such a wicked man has an opportunity to get to know God, but if it is rejected, for whatever reason, God has no other choice but to eternally cast such people into eternal damnation.

Exodus 5:2 And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.

God has His Tent in Israel, Psalm 76:2

Psalm 76:2 In Salem also is his tabernacle, and his dwelling place in Zion.

The tabernacle is the tent of God's House. The temple that was made later was a structure to house this tent, and enlarge the service area where the priests worked. The word used and the connection to it being a covert or protection from the dangers of the world.

Psalm 27:5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.

God stops all evil at Israel, Psalm 76:3

Psalm 76:3 There brake he the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah.

There is quite a remarkable thing that God does. Because God has chosen the land of Israel to give to his nation of priests, and the place for his tabernacle, evil is attracted to this location for grand showdowns. Evil cannot stand the presence of goodness, righteousness and holiness, and does everything possible to stamp out God and His people. History has proven this now for 6,000 years. Abel, the first righteous man was murdered by his brother who had started his own religion. Cain could not stand the fact that his brother did what was right and so was blessed of God. The Egyptians tried to do everything possible to limit the growth of the Jewish population and to eliminate them as a people. God stepped in when things were darkest and rescued Israel from Egypt, providing a miraculous way of escape, while bringing the Egyptians to their death that refused to leave Israel alone.

The word for arrows is the word for fire bolts. It is a hurled flame. These could be burning arrows, but in today's world, this would be the bullets that fly out of the muzzles of guns, canons and missiles. They could even be the bombs that are so prevalently used.

Armaments are worthless against God, just as any weapons and firepower is of no use to fire at God. The word for brake is to rip apart and crush completely. It is to dismantle and make worthless. Another use is to quench. God disables any weapons, armaments, artillery, or battles. One big advantage to the world's determination to amass weapons, and use them, is that in the last days, the nations of the world will bring their stock piles and armaments, and any weapons they have for a final showdown in Israel. The world will decide that the solution to all problems lies in completely destroying Israel and every Jew.

The sad thing is that this could happen today. The United Nations is considered to be the world government. All nations are to submit to the decisions of the UN. Our country fought long and hard to make sure their would be a world governing power, so that there would be peace among all nations. The problem is, ever since the beginning of the UN, there has been nothing but war. Our submission to the UN has taken our young men and women and placed them in over 175 battlefields, where the situation is the same as we faced in Vietnam and Korea. Our loved ones are being stuck in the middle of conflicts as policemen, and we are not allowed to take sides, just police the battlegrounds.

The problem is that every good parent tells their children to stay out of the middle of a fight that does not involve them, because there is only one result—the child is going to have both sides and their friends beat them up for sticking their nose where it does not belong. Our country is seeming on a campaign to get the world to hate us and to do all they can to destroy us.

The UN is also controlled and dominated by the Arab nations. They form such a majority and controlling factor, against our one vote, and Russia's one vote, and the European Union's one vote, that all that gets action is the resolutions condemning Israel. The EU and US try to get action against China, or deal with problems in Korea, but the Arabs refuse to allow such items reach a vote. Instead they bring up the same long list of actions against Israel.

Well, things will keep going like this, and the UN will probably eventually demand that all nations gather in Israel to completely destroy all the Jews. God will arrive and save the Jews and completely destroy all the world's armies and their toys. There will not be any need for the EPA to bring about long and toilsome solutions to the crisis of so much explosive, and other weapons, because God will completely purify the earth with the fire that proceeds before Him.

Even though God has done so much for Israel throughout her history, He has even greater things to do in the days ahead. Watch Israel, and you will never lack proof that God is very active.

T he Power of God is in Israel

Warriors are disabled there, Psalm 76:4-5

Psalm 76:4 Thou art more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey. The stouthearted are spoiled, they have slept their sleep: and none of the men of might have found their hands.

The mountains are such wonderful places to visit. They are fun to use to hunt. They are quiet, beautiful, and up in the clear air. When we lived down in San Andreas, we were shocked at the huge bumper to bumper line of cars that stretched from the Bay Area all the way to the mountains every weekend and on any holidays. City folk love the mountains. Those that live in the mountains would make their way down to the cities for supplies, but the were not that many compared to those going up.

No matter how glorious the mountains are, God is even greater. The mightiest, and most powerful human is comatose in the presence of God. They are incapable of raising their arms in action against their Creator. They are completely incapacitated.

Vehicles are disabled there, Psalm 76:6

Psalm 76:6 At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep.

God simply says the words and all vehicles will not even try to start. They become stuck, blocking the progress of any that would want to pass on the roads. It does not matter if it is animal power or combustion engines, they fall dead.

This was done to Balaam, the prophet that lived on prophecy for profit. He was trying to figure out a way to enjoy the huge payments that Balak the King of Moab was offering to pay, by trying different locations and methods. To his surprise, his trusted donkey refused to go forward. As he struck the animal, the animal talked to him.

Numbers 22:27 And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff. And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times? And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee. And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay. Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face. And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me: And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.

Before this God showed His power of human armies by slowing the progress of the Egyptian chariots by breaking off their wheels, and then drowning all the soldiers that persisted under Pharaoh.

Exodus 14:24 And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians, 25 And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians. 26 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen. 27 And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. 28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them.

Some may want to believe that these armies were crude compared to the armies and weaponry of today, but it is because they do not study history. If God could stop the armies of Biblical times through all manner of means, when there was less to go wrong than with the equipment we use today, He can stop any army, any time, anywhere.

Oppression is disabled there, Psalm 76:7-9

Psalm 76:7 Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry? Thou didst cause judgment to be heard from heaven; the earth feared, and was still, When God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. Selah.

Exodus 16:1-6 And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt. And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness: And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger. Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no. And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily. And Moses and Aaron said unto all the children of Israel, At even, then ye shall know that the LORD hath brought you out from the land of Egypt:

T he Purpose of God is in Israel

God inspires respect , Psalm 76:10

Psalm 76:10 Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain.

God uses the stubborn wickedness of mankind to demonstrate and contrast His love, care, and extreme power. The longer man persists in his evil, the more glorious praise becomes for God. God turns the wrath that people have to Him into praise and another opportunity for man to praise Him.

But it must also be remembered that man is not going to get away with being angry at God. God limits and restrains sin. There is the time limit, where the person dies, and usually sooner, because of the way anger tears away at the person's own cellular structure. No only does the stomach weaken, but the organs are effected negatively as well. The whole immune system breaks down, and even attacks the body. The result is a dramatic shortening of potential life time.

God limits man's wrath, through the necessities of life. There are family problems that must be addressed. There are physical problems that hinder the carrying out of plans. There are intense fears and incapacities that stop a person's wrath.

There is also the limit of geography. Man's wrath is localized. It does not extend very far without involving others. Dictators can use their vast military strength, but even the best of the world, cannot be omnipresent. Many people have escaped the reach of soldiers. The world's most wanted men of this age have not been found, no matter what is used to track them.

Man's wrath is limited by the cost of energy. With everything in this world running down, and degrading, man's strength can only go so far. After that, there is little that can be done. Resources are limited. Unless God provide, a person has limited resources whereby he can stretch to meet his wishes.

God inspires loyalty and generosity, Psalm 76:11

Psalm 76:11 Vow, and pay unto the LORD your God: let all that be round about him bring presents unto him that ought to be feared.

God provides so we can show Him honor by putting Him first in our finances and resources. This demonstrates that we know who gave us the resources to use, and it enables us to show who comes first in our lives.

There is a movement that says we should never make promises because promises are made to be broken. This is a sad avoidance of responsibility. There are three major promises that a person makes in life. One is to obey and honor their parents, but that takes the involvement of parents to learn. The next is our promise to God to accept His lordship over our lives and to turn to Him for our salvation. The third promise is the one we make in marriage, to stand in loyalty and honor to the one who God has given to us by this sacred vow.

After this, there are many promises that should be made to God and others. We should vow to honor God, by demonstrating His love toward those that hate us and mistreat us. We should also vow to put God first in every decision that we make. There is a great deal of blessing to be had in our vows to God. Now God takes us at our word. There is nothing worse than to vow and not pay. This makes us of the kindred of the devil. But not making a vow to God and trusting in faith for Him to aid us in paying it, is a demonstration of our lack of faith and trust in God. Now, common sense should govern our actions. Foolishly making a vow, without careful consideration of the will of God is a dangerous thing. Many a child has been sacrificed even to God because of a vow made. God gives us children to raise and train into service for Him, not to execute or deliver to the world to train and raise.

God inspires leadership qualities, Psalm 76:12

Psalm 76:12 He shall cut off the spirit of princes: he is terrible to the kings of the earth.

This next verse, is a wonderful assurance to every believer today. Christians throughout the world suffer daily at the hands of our government and the governments of many other nations. There is actually no government that is protective of the Saint of God, because they are afraid of the righteous because their deeds are evil. As such, the saints of God are daily beaten, imprisoned, falsely accused and found guilty, martyred, and tortured. All because people are in power and abuse their power.

God is not going to let that happen forever. Such abuse of power is going to be cut off. Such horrible deeds are going to face the judgment of God. Such abuse is going to be ended forever in His kingdom.

Hitler is going to have to stand before God one day and answer for his crimes, just as our president is going to have to answer as to why he does not follow the constitution he has sworn to uphold, by protecting this country's own borders, and yielding national powers to world governance. One man claims to be a Christian. Another showed absolute disdain to every form of godliness.

We too are going to stand before God, but as His children, our lives will be examined to see if there is anything that will stand for eternal reward. Man will suffer loss, and be saved by the skin of their teeth. Many others will stand in praise before God and be generously rewarded. Where will we stand?

The Benefit of Restraint
By Pastor Clinton Macomber

When we see God's work, we are always glad we exercised restraint in seeking vengeance.

1 Samuel 25:39 And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the LORD hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife.

God at times forces a redirection of those who rage against Him, because they do not evidence any self-restraint, nor respond to the blocks and warnings established by God.

2 Kings 19:28 Because thy rage against me and thy tumult is come up into mine ears, therefore I will put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.

When we beg of God that He keep us from doing wrong, He is please to grant our request.

1 Chronicles 4:10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.

Restraint takes the help of God when seeking to not sin so not be offended by our own actions.

Psalm 19:13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins ; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.

We are warned to not act like animals that have to be controlled lest they harm people.

Psalm 32:9 Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.

God can turn the anger man has toward God into something that brings praise and demonstrates His power and glory.

Psalm 76:10 Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain.

Restraint can only come as God sets a watch on us, guarding our lips and actions.

Psalm 141:3 Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.

As we learn to follow God and forgive those about us, we learn to restrain ourselves as God would have us do. This enables God to deliver us from the evil one.

Luke 11:4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

Our Savior wisely prayed that we would not be taken from the world, but that God would keep us from evil, while in the world and being trained in the world.

John 17:15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

Quote

Does our words of praise match our character?

We praise Jesus Christ for His great self-sacrifice for us; are we denying ourselves in His spirit that others might be benefited? We bless God for the Gospel; are we exemplifying the spirit of the Gospel? A certain Dr. Whitaker, on reading the fifth chapter of Matthew, brake out, saying, “Either this is not the Gospel, or we are not of the Gospel.” And is it not to be feared that the spirit of the Gospel for which men praise God, and the spirit of their lives, are often widely different? Let-us evince the sincerity of our praise to God by imitating Him in our spirit and life. Let us admire Him, commune with Him, adore Him, until we are transformed into the same image. 1

Psalm 76 in History

To some it may seem that a psalm which originated in an event so marvelous, and which bears such indubitable marks of its origin, must be little adapted for the subsequent use of God's people, and therefore must be out of place in the hymnal of the church catholic. But facts refute such a notion. Times without number the psalm has been sung, as furnishing the fittest expression of the thoughts and feelings of God's people in view of deliverances performed for them. When the covenanters at Drumclog closed their ranks to meet the onset of Claverhouse and his dragoons, they sang the opening verses to the tune of Martyrs: “In Judah's land God is well known, His name's in Isr'el great: In Salem is his tabernacle, In Zion is his seat. There arrows of the bow he brake, The shield, the sword, the war. More glorious thou than hills of prey, More excellent art far. Those that were stout of heart are spoiled, They slept their sleep outright; And none of those their hands did find That were the men of might.” A century earlier, in 1588, when the first rumour of the discomfiture of the Spanish Armada reached Edinburgh, and the citizens assembled to render thanks to God, Robert Bruce, addressing them in the West Kirk, took this psalm for his text, and the two noble sermons he preached on the occasion were, from beginning to end, little more than a running commentary on the psalm. And every hearer must have felt that the whole was as appropriate to the circumstances as if the psalm had been written for the occasion. 1

Devotions

Monday, Psalm 76:1-2 and Ecclesiastes 4:1-3

There is a great danger in philosophy because it is rooted in observation of only one dimension. It does not consider the spiritual side of things, or the eternal aspects. It is based on the perceptions of a depraved mind. God is known to Israel and Judah. Solomon was king of the Israel, yet his observations and dependence on his own wisdom, proved him foolish. All he could find in and of himself was the same as what everyone else finds—a complete lack of any value. The oppressed have something that is great, if they are saved. They have God on their side, taking notes of all that happens to them, and bringing justice and limits as needed. Does God dwell in our hearts or in some foreign country? If He indwells us, is He a welcome and comfortable guest? How may we better accommodate His presence?

Tuesday, Psalm 76:3-4 and Ecclesiastes 4:4-5

It is a self-destructive move to reject the responsibilities that God gives to us, of honoring Him, our families and our neighbors. Instead we fight God and covet what others have worked hard to gain. God has proven himself strong, by proving the limits to all things. When we fold our hands and refuse to take action for righteousness, we destroy our chances of resting in the work of God, and instead join the ranks of those that fight against God. Our inactivity evidences an agreement with wickedness and the devil, because we are doing just what Satan wants, and not what God asks. Are we living a life that will enjoy the majesty of God?

Wednesday, Psalm 76:5-6 and Ecclesiastes 4:6-8

God blocks the progress of wickedness, so that they really do not make headway in the things they endeavor. The result of undertaking warfare against God and His people is a complete waste of life. It demonstrates a complete lack of self-evaluation from God's standpoint, that would enable a person to see the void and worthless living in which they throw their energies. Does God have to utter rebukes against us because we fight against His will? Where is an area we should repent of and seek God's help to change?

Thursday, Psalm 76:7-8 and Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

The Scriptures portray the contrast of being alone instead of being on God's side. When we are alone, because we will not walk with God, we are truly alone. When God has to stop people, they have no one to stand with them. When they walk with God, they are with God, doing the things that He would have done, they need not fear His terrifying rebuke. Instead they find His love. Where do we stand? With whom do we stand? Where do we go? What must change to walk with God?

Friday, Psalm 76:9-10 and Ecclesiastes 4:11-13

While earthly ties may help survive the scrapes of life, there is nothing that can compare to a heavenly union with God Himself. Man's wrath is nothing compared to God's power and wrath. By seeking to submit to God, and please Him by bringing Him the gifts He loves, we do much to show our appreciation for the manifold blessings of God. What have we given to God today? What have we done to show that our resources belong completely to God?

Saturday, Psalm 76:11-12 and Ecclesiastes 4:14-16

Power is fleeting. One has it but temporarily. It is usually abused. God says we ought to make vows to Him, and learn to honor Him by paying them. He will take care of the wickedness and abuse of power, by cutting off wicked leaders and teaching the kings to respect and fear Him. Are we doing our part by paying vows to God? Or are we so concerned about abuse of power, that we are wasting our life? What is our vow today that we can learn to trust God to answer and help us meet?
