Psalm

Psalm 74

1 O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever? why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?
2 Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.
3 Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual desolations; even all that the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary.
4 Thine enemies roar in the midst of thy congregations; they set up their ensigns for signs.
5 A man was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees.
6 But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers.
7 They have cast fire into thy sanctuary, they have defiled by casting down the dwelling place of thy name to the ground.
8 They said in their hearts, Let us destroy them together: they have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land.
9 We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.
10 O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?
11 Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand? pluck it out of thy bosom.
12 For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.
13 Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters.
14 Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.
15 Thou didst cleave the fountain and the flood: thou driedst up mighty rivers.
16 The day is thine, the night also is thine: thou hast prepared the light and the sun.
17 Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter.
18 Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O LORD, and that the foolish people have blasphemed thy name.
19 O deliver not the soul of thy turtledove unto the multitude of the wicked : forget not the congregation of thy poor for ever.
20 Have respect unto the covenant: for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty.
21 O let not the oppressed return ashamed: let the poor and needy praise thy name.
22 Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily.
23 Forget not the voice of thine enemies: the tumult of those that rise up against thee increaseth continually.

Sermon

Did God Toss Us Away?
Psalm 74

Evidences of God's Anger

Psalm 74:1 O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever? why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?

How small we make God out to be! How foolish can we be? We say things like: Does God hear us? Is God hearing us? Does God even know or care about us? Why would God care about us? This foolishness is based on feelings and not faith. The problem with feelings is they are not based on facts. They are based on perception. As we enter the Christian life, there are times we think that God is angry with us, because things do not go smoothly and “heavenly” for us.

Psalm 74:2 Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.

The Apostle Paul asks, how can God cast away his people? The answer is that God has not cast away his people. God has purchased freedom from the penalty of sin with the blood of his own Son. He has made everlasting promises with them, assuring them that He will give eternal life and an inheritance beyond anything we could get in this world. He has taken us when we were discarded as worthless, and taken us into His family through adoption.

Our Lord and Savior added the facts of His interest in us by letting us know that the very hairs of our head are all numbered. God has given us so much at such a great cost, He can not cast us away. But, when we take our spiritual eyes off of God and put on the eyes of the world, things may look bleak to us and directly impact our soul.

Psalm 74:3-8 Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual desolations; even all that the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary.

By looking at things from an earthly standpoint, we see disaster among the places of God. People have turned from churches and abandoned the Christian values. Other churches are vandalized. More specifically, the Temple of God in Jerusalem lies in ruins. Those who want to eliminate the Jew and Christian have several Mosques on the site. They threaten international war should their destructive presence be challenged. There seems to be no fear of God in the world anymore. It seems as if God will not step forward and take a look at the damage done, that it will simply go on forever.

What is forgotten is that the things of this earth are going to pass away and be destroyed. Buildings are simply temporary structures, no matter what the builders think. Many a building has been constructed over many years and at the cost of many lives, yet today, these places are gone. Nothing remains of these wonders of the world. Nothing that is earthly can last, because it is temporal.

2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

Luke 21:33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

God's word will not pass away and the one who casts their hope and faith in God and His word will also endure forever.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Oh how soon we forget. God has made us a new person. He has enabled us to develop as a person of Heaven and His Kingdom. We find ourselves leaving the new wonders He has given to go back to the slough of despondency. Like the apostle Peter we want to go back to fishing when He has called us to preach and teach His word. But the son continues.

Psalm 74:9-11 We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long. 10 O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever? 11 Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand? pluck it out of thy bosom.

We can get so frantic that we want to know exactly what day things will change. We do not want to be told to be patient, we want to be told the secrets. Yet, we are not willing to put any effort into learning the ways of God to understand His time frames. While God has laid out the schedule of many things, it is not productive for us to have knowledge of the exact numbers. Jesus said that he did not even know the exact dates, such is kept by the Father.

What we can do is learn to understand time in the eyes of God. God is more interested in our spiritual growth. It is important that we learn the character of His spirit. We need to learn to have faith and trust in the provision and care of God. The only way we learn such valuable attributes is to go through periods of trial, when we feel as if God is not there.

God with holds his wrath in order that people everywhere will have more of a chance to repent. By bringing the rapture too early, there will be many who could have been saved that will not be saved. There will also be many Christians who will have weak character and a weak spirit.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Letting ourselves get stuck in the worldly and old dead nature is deadly, because it robs us of our faith and takes away our hope.

Hope kept Red McDaniel going in his Vietnamese imprisonment. For him to abandon hope, he wrote, was to abandon survival itself and with it his sense of self and all his personhood. The Jews at Auschwitz and Treblinka lived in daily horror and fear of dying, even as they saw other Jews die. Still, they never lost hope that they personally would survive. “Where there is life, hope must never be relinquished,” one said. 1

When we turn away from God and the blessings of his new creation in us, we are like a person that abandons a mansion to return to their condemned apartment in an abandoned building. There the person sits in a room over run by rats and vermin, without heat, under a leaky roof, and no way to prepare food or get clean. As we look about, we then wonder why God has abandoned us, when in fact we have abandoned God and His provisions for us. In order to see God's loving care, we have to leave our old life, and learn to live and trust God in everything.

Evidences of God's Loving Care

Psalm 74:12-14 For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth. 13 Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters. 14 Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.

God has a long history of caring for His people and His care is all around us. God provided a way for us to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. He has also provided a place to live by dividing the oceans and seas so that land can appear after the flood. He has also had the great threats to human life destroyed, by ending the era of the dinosaurs and dragons. Their death even provided fertilizer and food for those in desolate places.

Psalm 74:15-17 Thou didst cleave the fountain and the flood: thou driedst up mighty rivers. 16 The day is thine, the night also is thine: thou hast prepared the light and the sun. 17 Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter.

There is amazing evidence of the mighty rivers that once existed on this earth. Such rivers were a danger to mankind. These rivers and lakes are now gone. God also has provided perfectly timed day and night to accommodate human life. God also provides perfect lighting and heat from the sun and moon. There are natural borders to protect different countries from undue warfare, and protected assets of crops and goods. The seasons are also are absolutely perfect to provide for the needs of plants and trees to produce properly. Everything about the earth is conducive to human life. There are many variables that if just a little different from the way God set things up, human life could not survive.

The following is a list of 10 absolute essentials to providing for life on the earth. If any one of these essentials were changed, life would end. “Distance from the sun, orbital speed, rotational spin, axis tilt, wobble angle, moon size and distance from the earth, diameter, oceanic level, crust thickness, atmospheric content.” 2 The following is a summary of these facts.

The sun's surface is 11,500° Fahrenheit. If the sun were just 50° Fahrenheit more or less than it is for one year, life could not be sustained on the earth.

The earth spins at the rate of 18 miles per second. If that speed dropped to 6 miles per second, life would burn up. If it were increased to 40 miles per second, the earth would fly out of orbit and life would freeze to death.

The earth rotates at the equator at a speed of 1000 miles per hour. If the rotation were slowed just a little bit, the days would get too hot during the day, and the nights would cause freezing. The other problem would be the inability of man to be able to sleep during the cooler temperatures and darkness.

The earth is tilted on its axis by 23° and this tilt helps keep the sun's rays in balance so that life is not too hot or cold. A change in tilt would eliminate the seasons, and cause the oceans to evaporate. High winds would carry the water and form continents of ice. This bulging of ice would reshape the earth and cause other problems.

There is a wobble in the earth's rotation. This too contributes to support life on earth. A change in wobble would cause the poles to freeze over, causing the oceans to shrink and there to be more land, and so much more desert. The opposite change in wobble would cause the oceans to rise, and the carbon dioxide to be absorbed, eliminating the support of plant life that produces the necessary oxygen we need to breathe, as well as the animals.

The moon's size and distance is in perfect balance. If it were closer or bigger, the ocean tides would pounds the Rocky Mountains, allowing the waters to quickly erode the land masses, leaving the earth covered with water. If the moon were smaller or further way, there would not be enough tide and waves in order to replenish the oxygen in the oceans, on which the ocean life depends.

The diameter of the earth is 8,000 miles. If the earth were larger, the force of gravity would be increased, and air would be heavier on the surface of the earth, causing the oceans to cover much of the earth. If the earth were smaller, gravity would decrease, and the atmosphere would escape into outer space, making life impossible on earth. Also the earth would be pelted by meteorites, with a surface very much like the moon.

The earth surface is 70% water. This acts as a thermostat, causing the earth's temperatures to remain stable. Water can absorb huge amounts of heat, without having its temperature change. If the oceans were lower, we would have longer and hotter summers. Many parts of the earth would get so hot it would boil the water during the day, yet would get so cold at night the water would freeze. If there were more water on the surface of the earth, carbon dioxide would be absorbed, snuffing out plant life and robbing the earth of oxygen.

The thickness of the earth's crust is just right. If only 10 more feet of matter were added to the earth's surface, the oxygen in the atmosphere would be removed.

The earth's atmosphere is kept at a constant, but very delicate balance. A slight increase in the oxygen levels from the 21% to just 25% would make it impossible to control fires. Even pouring rain could not put out the fires. If it were 10% more, the earth would explode in a huge ball of fire. If it were 10% less, there would be no way to have a natural fire.

Evidences of God's Obligation

Psalm 74:18 Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O LORD, and that the foolish people have blasphemed thy name.

God keeps careful records and gives everyone his day in court. He knows and does not need to be reminded of the ungrateful attitudes of those in this world. Even while evil people are expending energy to cast dispersions upon God, He extends to them life, and health. They will have much to answer for, when God sets things right.

Psalm 74:19-20 O deliver not the soul of thy turtledove unto the multitude of the wicked : forget not the congregation of thy poor for ever. 20 Have respect unto the covenant: for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty.

Turtledoves were the poor person's sacrifice, because they are very common in inhabited places. Leviticus 1:14. Such birds were no match to those who sought to harm them.

God has promised to take care of us, and enable us to face whatever comes our way. He cannot go back on His word and ignore his covenant.

Psalm 74:21-23 O let not the oppressed return ashamed: let the poor and needy praise thy name. 22 Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily. 23 Forget not the voice of thine enemies: the tumult of those that rise up against thee increaseth continually.

It is important to express our need of God's interaction into the affairs of man, because God will respond to our prayers. It also gives legal reason for God to bring about change. If there are prayers throughout all ages begging for God's help, and an end to wickedness, the devil does not have a legal footing. Mankind chose to follow the ways of the old serpent, and has paid dearly for it. There is nothing that can be done to make matters better under a society sold out to sin and debauchery. Only God can bring about a change, and only God can insure there is justice.

When things look bad, pray earnestly. Those prayers ascend up to heaven and are saved as precious record of the need of God's Kingdom.

God always keeps His promises, but He wants to hear that His help is needed and desired.

The wicked are like the troubled sea when it cannot rest, whose waters stir up mire and dirt. They are incapable of finding peace and lash out angrily at those who do. They are like the story of the dogs.

The prize for the most useless weapon of all times goes to the Russians. They invented the “dog mine.” The plan was to train the dogs to associate food with the undersides of tanks, in the hope that they would run hungrily beneath advancing Panzer divisions. Bombs were then strapped to the dogs' backs, which endangered the dogs to the point where no insurance company would look at them. Unfortunately, the dogs associated food solely with Russian tanks. The plan was begun the first day of the Russian involvement in World War II...and abandoned on day two. The dogs with bombs on their backs forced an entire Soviet division to retreat. 3

Topic Study

Psalm 74 Topic
Anger of God

Deliverance comes through intercessory prayer by God's leader.

Numbers 11:1-2 And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it ; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp. 2 And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the LORD, the fire was quenched.

Deuteronomy 9:19-20 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith the LORD was wroth against you to destroy you. But the LORD hearkened unto me at that time also. 20 And the LORD was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him: and I prayed for Aaron also the same time.

Deliverance from God's anger comes from decisive action against evil.

Numbers 25:3-4 And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel. 4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.

Numbers 25:7-8 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it , he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand; 8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

Deliverance from God's anger comes from obedience

Deuteronomy 13:16-18 And thou shalt gather all the spoil of it into the midst of the street thereof, and shalt burn with fire the city, and all the spoil thereof every whit, for the LORD thy God: and it shall be an heap for ever; it shall not be built again. 17 And there shall cleave nought of the cursed thing to thine hand: that the LORD may turn from the fierceness of his anger, and shew thee mercy, and have compassion upon thee, and multiply thee, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers; 18 When thou shalt hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee this day, to do that which is right in the eyes of the LORD thy God.

Deliverance from God's anger comes from justice

Joshua 7:13 Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.

Deliverance from God's anger comes from life-changing repentance.

Joel 2:12-14 Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: 13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. 14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?

Deliverance from God's wrath comes from the shed blood of Christ for us

Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

Quote

Psalm 74 Quote:

“But if you will not believe Mr. Wesley when he declares, that God is displeased at the persons of the righteous, the moment they do those things which displease him, believe at least the oracles of God. “God's anger was kindled against Moses,” Exod. 4:14. “The Lord was very angry against Aaron,” Deut. 9:20; and with all Israel: witness those awful words, “Let me alone, that I may consume them in a moment!” Isaiah, whom you allow to be an elect, says, “Thou wast angry with me.” God himself says, Isaiah 47:6, “I was angry with my people:” and David, who frequently deprecates God's wrath in his penitential Psalms, observes, that “his anger smokes against the sheep of his pasture,” when they go astray, Psalm 74:1.” 1

Devotions

Monday, Psalm 74:1-4 & Ecclesiastes 2:1-5

There is a mighty contrast between the value system of the world and the child of God. The worldly person goes about seeking to make life better for himself. The child of God is abused in the process, as sacred things are stolen and desecrated, and reverence is ridiculed in society. The person seeking to honor God cries out to God to protect the things we do for Him, and so we should. It is not right to have people who are so humanistic they will not accept the provisions of God. Is there a clear distinction between us and the world, or are we so much like the world we join the scorner and defile holy things?

Tuesday, Psalm 74:5-8 & Ecclesiastes 2:6-9

God blessed his children by giving them the desire to care for things, and so enjoy the results of careful planning and care. Wicked people vandalize things and have no respect for the work that people do. When we do not care for the things in our custody, we are no different from an ungodly person. What are some things we had better make it a habit to take better care of so we do evidence any wicked thing before God?

Wednesday, Psalm 74:9-12 & Ecclesiastes 2:10-13

There is a real danger of becoming lethargic by thinking that our work is worthless and of no value, because of the ridicule and lack of accomplishment in the things we do. We also may feel as if we have no real direction and progress. But success is not measured in earthly accomplishments or by things constructed. It is measured by the things learned and the character developed. We may feel like we are building sand castles on the sea shore, which are destroyed each time the tide comes in, or destroyed by someone running along the beach. It is not what we can show, but what we learned and the character qualities that were developed from the whole process. Have we built any “sand castles?”

Thursday, Psalm 74:13-16 & Ecclesiastes 2:14-18

There is a huge difference between God's work and ours. Ours is misunderstood and considered of little worth. What we may do is left for someone else to deal with after we die. God's work however is eternal. His power can stop the most formidable foe. The day belongs to God, and only what God wants done will last. Everything else will fail. Have we evaluated our day to see if we are doing what God wants?

Friday, Psalm 74:17-20 & Ecclesiastes 2:19-22

The worldly sinner may look upon the Christian life and see nothing but sacrifice and pain. God however sees a person being purged of sin and corruption so that he can stand in His image. Trying to make ourselves notable in this world is a complete waste of time and energy, because our reputation is left to others who distort the truth and do not care for our endeavors as we would. A Christian can honestly look to God in thanksgiving for being changed and worked with each day. Have you thanked God for suffering? Have you asked that God keep working to make you like Him?

Saturday, Psalm 74:21-23 & Ecclesiastes 2:23-26

We, as people born into an economy and system marred by sin, may feel as if we know how things should be run. We think that good people should have a fun and easy life and bad people should give all they have to the good people. In reality, things do not work that way yet. There is a day, when we will inherit the people and possessions of those on the earth, and will have to work with them, as God has worked with us, turning them to God and in obedience to Him. In order to do this, we have to experience many things on this earth in order to be proper judges. What can we record that we have learned about being a fair judge from this last week.
