Psalm
Psalm 73
1 Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.
2 But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.
3 For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4 For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.
5 They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men.
6 Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.
7 Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.
8 They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily.
9 They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.
10 Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.
11 And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?
12 Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.
13 Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency.
14 For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.
15 If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children.
16 When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;
17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.
18 Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction.
19 How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.
20 As a dream when one awaketh; so , O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image.
21 Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins.
22 So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee.
23 Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand.
24 Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.
25 Whom have I in heaven but thee ? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.
26 My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.
27 For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee.
28 But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.

Sermon
Notes on Psalm 73
By Pastor Clinton Macomber
Background
This is the first of a group of eleven Psalms (73-83) written by Asaph, a chief musician for the Tabernacle, 1 Chronicles 16:4-5. He also wrote Psalm 50, making twelve Psalms attributed to him, and the second largest contributor of hymns after David.
Psalm 73:1
Good
This is a most common word describing things that are pleasing and beneficial. Many verses speak of God's goodness, making this a highly appreciated trait of the Almighty.
God has more than enough goodness that He shares.
Exodus 34:6 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
God makes His people prosper so they in turn can be good to others.
Deuteronomy 30:9 And the LORD thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good : for the LORD will again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced over thy fathers:
God's goodness is something to sing about and God loves to be with those that honor Him appropriately.
2 Chronicles 5:13 It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the LORD, saying , For he is good ; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD;
God's goodness is the first thing people notice and give thanks to God for sharing with them.
2 Chronicles 7:3 And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the LORD upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and praised the LORD, saying , For he is good ; for his mercy endureth for ever.
God's goodness enables Him to teach sinners the truth as they walk on the path of seeking to do what is right and proper.
Psalm 25:8 Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way.
The earth is filled with examples of God's goodness .
Psalm 33:5 He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD.
Samplings of God's goodness is available to all who will accept them.
Psalm 34:8 O taste and see that the LORD is good : blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
God's goodness is eternal and prevalent.
Psalm 52:1 Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually.
God is particularly good to those that seek Him.
Lamentations 3:25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
Parental goodness is a sampling of the goodness of God.
Matthew 7:11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
Calling people good is a misuse of the term, because only God is good.
Matthew 19:17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good ? there is none good but one, that is , God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
The needy get what is beneficial from God, and the wealthy are sent away empty handed (till they become needy).
Luke 1:53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
We are to show goodness even to those who are our enemies and hate us, to demonstrate the face we are children of the Highest.
Luke 6:35 But love ye your enemies, and do good , and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
God's goodness leads us to repentance.
Romans 2:4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
God's goodness can be severed if we do not dwell in God and depend on Him.
Romans 11:22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness : otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.
It is proper to pray for the fulness of God's goodness to come upon those that worship Him.
2 Thessalonians 1:11 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:
Only God gives the perfect and beneficial gifts.
James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Clean Heart
Is God's goodness only limited to Israelites? No, it is limited to those who have a pure heart. This means their heart is healthy and their motives and thoughts pure. We has Christians get to enjoy the benefits as we are temporary grafts into the vine of God. A lack of a clean heart makes us unhealthy and a danger to the vine, so it must be cut away. This shows how important it is to learn to unite completely with the will and teaching of God. This alone enables a fruitful life.
Psalm 73:2
Slipped
This word has to do with the shedding and pouring out of blood and human life. It is speaking more than just slipping and falling down, this is speaking of a slip and fall that is life threatening. To a person who is living in luxury, someone who is in dire need of help is like a worthless lamp! In other words, there is little sympathy to be offered to the fallen in this world.
Job 12:5 He that is ready to slip with his feet is as a lamp despised in the thought of him that is at ease.
Psalm 73:3
Envious of the foolish
We are commanded to not envy the ungodly.
Proverbs 3:31 Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.
Proverbs 24:1 Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.
In this case there is envy of the fool. This fool is the one who is all show. They are all for external appearances, and are proud, and use grandiose words. The use of the very word shows that Asaph recognized the fact that he was falling in envy over a big act. The whole lifestyle and glamour was faked. It was not real, nor based on anything real.
This class of people run churches as pastors, elders, and missionaries. They are salesmen, con artists and fund raisers. These people have a high suicide rate and suffer from intense bouts of depression. Their whole life is pretentious. This is why the media is so dangerous. It is a haven for such people, giving them wide audiences of people who do not realize the actual lifestyles of those characters portrayed. God's design is for small house churches where people really get to know each other and can easily see if the life style presented is genuine, or just a show.
Psalm 73:4
Bands in death
“A similar complaint can be seen by Job who says of the wicked, “They spend their days in wealth and in a moment go down to the grave” (Job 21:13). The notion was very prevalent in the Ancient Near East that a quiet death meant a happy life thereafter. It puzzled Asaph, as it did Job, that the wicked died painlessly.” 1
Psalm 73:5
Trouble
Joseph used this word when his boys were born. The joy of having sons was so great, he was able to put the troubles of his life behind him.
Genesis 41:51 And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: For God, said he , hath made me forget all my toil , and all my father's house.
Job used this term when describing the difficulties that come. They are not “in the soil” but in life.
Job 5:6-7 Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground; 7 Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.
Evil people try to increase the amount of troubles a person has to carry.
Proverbs 24:1-2 Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them. 2 For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.
There is no profit in all the labors and sufferings man takes on in the physical realm.
Ecclesiastes 1:3 What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
Troubles can be exhilarating, if one has the proper perspective, but they are still of no earthly value.
Ecclesiastes 2:10-11 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour : and this was my portion of all my labour . 11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.
Psalm 73:6
Pride, Violence
The unregenerate person in pride hurts the needy.
Psalm 10:2 The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined.
The foolish mouth strikes out in pride.
Proverbs 14:3 In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.
Pride is what brings a person down.
Proverbs 29:23 A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.
This violence is what made the flood necessary.
Genesis 6:11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
Evil hunts down the violent to destroy him.
Psalm 140:11 Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him .

Psalm 73:7
Eyes Stand Out in Fatness
The ungodly are so selfish, they bulge in fat, and peer out from their fat faces, having more than they need, and more than a person should wish to have. A godly person would only use as much as was necessary to survive and then share all they can with others.
We find this selfish behavior in Job.
Job 15:27 Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
Psalm 73:8
Corrupt
This word is from the root of to burn and has the idea of scoffing and “burning” other people verbally.
Psalm 73:9
Antichrist, the coming world ruler is going to be blasphemous against God.
Revelation 13:4-6 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? 5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
Psalm 73:10
The evil people return to evil and experience the judgment of God as it is poured on them.
Jeremiah 2:19 Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.
Psalm 75:8 For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them .
Psalm 73:13
It is easy to fall prey to doubts if we look at things through the distortions of the world, and sin. This is why we are to press toward heaven and keep our sight on that which is holy and from above. Wasting time comparing our lives with what we think we see is sin. It brings discouragement and a loss of fruitfulness, and can risk failure in the spiritual life.
Psalm 73:14
It is a privilege to have constant and consistent training, because that means there is more for us to look forward to enjoying.
Hebrews 12:5-6 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: 6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
Psalm 73:15
Losing faith to earthly things is a direct slap in the face of those who are godly. We tend to think our sins are self-contained, but they are not. There is a direct impact on all who profess the name of Jesus for salvation. Just as the Crusades and atrocities of the Roman Church have a lasting impact on all Christians, by giving reason to the ungodly to believe Christians are bloody people, so denying the faith through disbelief impacts Christians, by demonstrating a hypocrisy.
Malachi 2:8 But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of hosts.
Matthew 18:6-7 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. 7 Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!
1 Corinthians 8:11-13 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? 12 But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ. 13 Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.
Psalm 73:17
There is a reason we are to spend much time in prayer and the study of the Holy Scriptures. It is only in this mode that we learn to see spiritually. Just as a child spends a great deal of time to learn math facts for the single purpose of being able to handle rational problems, so the child of God must immerse himself spiritually to learn the ways of God.
Psalm 73:18
Worship gives us a completely different perspective on things, because the very act is a demonstration of honor to the power of God. Humans wish to think they are in control of the events in their lives, but they are not. They have no control, and must learn to handle them as God teaches them how to grow spiritually. Often deep personal pain is a blessing, because God knows we can handle such things, and knows it is time to bring on tougher challenges to our faith.
Psalm 73:19
Cast of Pompeii Woman caught in Volcano in 79 B.C. 3
Psalm 73:20
When we have a nightmare, we wake up horrified and do not want to have anything to do with that dream. In the same way, the wicked are like a nightmare to God. There is a day coming when He will completely remove them and place them into eternal punishment. The brief time they have in their earthly existence is only a dream. Reality is coming, and they will not be a part of the restoration of all things.
Isaiah 29:7-8 And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her munition, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision. 8 It shall even be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.
Psalm 73:22-24
“The groans and triumphal song of a believer are not far separated, as you may see in Paul, Romans 7:24, 25:“O wretched man,” and “I thank God,?” all in one breath! David felt the same (Ps. 73). At one verse he feels himself a fool and a beast in the sight of a holy God, and in the very next verses he is cleaving to Christ with a song of unspeakable joy (Ps. 73:22–24). Ah! there is a sweet mystery here—bitter herbs along with our Passover Lamb. It is sweet to see ourselves infinitely vile, that we may look to Jehovah our Righteousness, as all our way to the Father.” 4
Psalm 74:28
When we resist the flesh and draw near to God, it is easy to put our trust in Him. We gain a true perspective on the events of life. We understand our place, and we are able to share what we learn with others. It all starts in our forsaking the pleasures of sin, and reaching forth to that which lasts eternally.

Topic Study
Psalm 73 Topic Clean
The Clean Heart
There is a danger of thinking we are clean when we are not.
Job 11:4 For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure , and I am clean in thine eyes.
God's commands are pure and bring clarity to the vision.
Psalm 19:8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure , enlightening the eyes.
To be allowed to climb God's Holy Hill, clean hands and a pure heart are the first requirements.
Psalm 24:3-4 Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? 4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.
God is good to those of a pure heart
Psalm 73:1 Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.
Clean pens are easily kept unless there are oxen in them, yet the oxen are beneficial because of their productive strength. A productive person must work harder at keeping a clean heart.
Proverbs 14:4 Where no oxen are , the crib is clean : but much increase is by the strength of the ox.
The pure ones are the valuable ones in a family.
Song of Solomon 6:9 My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her; yea , the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
The sun is an example of purity.
Song of Solomon 6:10 Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?
Quote
Psalm 73 Quote
Pastor Dale Satterthwaite said:
“I think that it is good for us all to keep in mind, that, we are just passing through here. Someone said to me the other day, about a very ill person, with rather a bit of awe in their voice, “The doctor says: ‘It is just a matter of time.'” I looked at him and said, “It is for all of us.” Some of us have a little more time, perhaps, but it is a matter of time. This old life comes to an end after a little while. What then?
“Well, Asaph said, “When I saw what their end was, I was ashamed because of my thoughts before the Lord.” I like what he said. He said, “The Lord still held my hand.” “Nevertheless, even though I was like a beast in my dumbness, the Lord still held my hand.” In that experience, Asaph came to the place where he said, “Lord, there is nothing in heaven I want but you. And really, all the world offers is nothing beside you.”
“If you have not come to that place yet, you need some more trials! You need to be camped before the Red Sea! You need to taste the poor waters! You need to get to a land of famine and drought; until you find that Jesus is all you need, and your heart's need is really met in Him.” 1

In Pilgrim's Progress is the dialogue between Hope and Christian:
“Ah, brother, (said he,) surely if I was right he would now arise to help me; but for my sins he hath brought me into the snare, and hath left me. Then said Hopeful, My brother, you have quite forgot the text where it is said of the wicked, "There are no bands in their death, but their strength is firm; they are not troubled as other men, neither are they plagued like other men." Psa. 73:4,5. These troubles and distresses that you go through in these waters, are no sign that God hath forsaken you; but are sent to try you, whether you will call to mind that which heretofore you have received of his goodness, and live upon him in your distresses.” 1

Devotions
Monday, Psalm 73:1-5 & Ecclesiastes 1:1-3
These two passages present similar questions. What is the purpose of life when there does not seem to be an advantage to doing the right things? Of course the problem is the perspective. If we are looking at soiled lives, we are not going to see the blessings of a sanctified life. Also, our perspective is extremely superficial, as it was for Samuel. Samuel was directed to appoint the tallest and most handsome young fellow as king of Israel. Then when it was time to appoint a replacement, He figured the most handsome would be the answer, but God pointed to a young lad. It is important we learn to see people as God sees them, so we can help them appropriately.
Tuesday, Psalm 73:6-10 & Ecclesiastes 1:4-6
There are cycles to everything, including habits. The person that rejects the God of Scripture and adopts a god of someone's invention, is going to keep coming back to the same sins and face God's wrath. From that place of judgment, they leave only to return back for more judgment. The child of God does not want to suffer, so he avoids chastisement as much as possible, and learns from each experience.
Wednesday, Psalm 73:11-15 & Ecclesiastes 1:7-9
There is nothing new. Ungodliness and their pretentious lifestyles are not new. Humble, trusting people that have doubts at a period in their life is not new. Wanting more than we have is not new. God's children have to accept by faith the realities of the spiritual reward. They also have to accept by faith the end of the story.
Thursday, Psalm 73:16-20 & Ecclesiastes 1:10-12
The answer is seen in both history and worship. When a person goes to God's house, he experiences strict laws of cleanliness and purity. The closer you get to the sanctuary, the higher the level of restrictions. History demonstrates God's feelings toward the wicked, in spite of the fact He seeks to let mankind try to govern themselves.
Friday, Psalm 73:21-24 & Ecclesiastes 1:13-15
There is a real danger in becoming set in our ways. Our lives cannot be undone. What is lost because of sin and evil, is lost forever. While sin can be forgiven by God, there remains a void and loss in our life as a result of that lost opportunity of service. Those who reject God and His word, set themselves into a position of not being able to make their lives count, or have value. They set themselves in the position of eternal judgment. God's holy child is guided all along the way to life everlasting.
Saturday, Psalm 73:25-28 & Ecclesiastes 1:16-18
There is a great loss when we seek to gain knowledge and do not seek God. Our public universities are an example. They are the seed beds of immorality, drunkenness, disorder, and atheism. Knowledge must be gained with and through God. His instruction is profitable and lasts eternally, and does not change with whim. The increase of knowing things is an increase in sadness and lack of a desire to live. The increase of divine wisdom, brings joy and purpose into the midst of intense human suffering.
