This advertisement was included to demonstrate the immoral nature of dance as described in the local Chicago newspaper. It is not to condone anything in the ad! Those of the world boldly and publicly state the sensual nature of dance. This attempt to "clean up" dance is not coming clean and away from the world. How can Christians ever condone such filth?

THE HOME OF CLEAN DANCING

Will Welcome All Other Ballrooms to

Places on the BAND WAGON of Clean Dancing

Seven years ago when I refused, at a meeting of the ballroom proprietors of Chicago, to prostitute myself and the little ballroom I was then conducting, by sanctioning immoral dances at the demand of the majority of the men and women at the meeting, one of them said to me:

“COME ON, GUYON, GET IN THE BAND WAGON. WE KNOW THEY ARE ROTTEN, BUT THERE IS MONEY IN THEM.”

I declined to pander for the privilege of riding with the music, and continued my fight against filth masquerading under the name of dancing.

For a long time I rode alone, but gradually there came into being a band wagon for my own use, and now I am informed by representatives of the United States Government, who have been investigating the condition of public dancing, that some of my rival band wagon’s passengers would be glad to change over to my vehicle.

I will welcome them. I will do more than that. I will assist them now and in the future, just as I have in the past.

There is just one way to get in the band wagon of clean dancing. Here it is:

ABOLISH JAZZ MUSIC

ABOLISH FOX-TROT, ONE-STEP, TODDLE, SHIMMY

or any form of dancing or any position that permits the gentleman to walk directly in front of his partner.

TO BALLROOM PROPRIETORS AND DANCING TEACHERS

Let’s give the American boy and girl a fair chance.

You know, as well as I, that no phase of modern life has as great possibility for harm as the public dance. You know that boys and girls will dance, and that dancing is an expression of an almost universal impulse, an impulse that overrides parental objection and obstacles of every sort.

Does the boy or girl who dances in your ballroom have a fair chance? Are you pitting your business ability against the virtue of the girls who come to your place of business? Are you trading on the manliness and the decent impulses of your boy patrons? Are you encouraging or discouraging the tendency toward bestiality that lies dormant in every boy and every girl? Are you taking advantage of the innocence and inexperience of youth to make easy dollars? Are you stamping out or fanning the flame of desire that lies in wait to destroy unsuspecting youth? Are you helping to destroy the respect man has given woman since civilization began? Are you robbing girls of wifehood and motherhood free from memories that awaken in the night and clutching fears of discovery? Are you feeding your patrons the insidious poison with which the harlot inflames the desires of her victim?

You know the answer to these questions.

Perhaps you say the responsibility is not yours, that it lies with the fathers and mothers of your patrons. But you know better. You know that the occasional instance of a mother selling her daughter’s honor or corrupting her son does not make it right for you to engage in a wholesale traffic in vice.

I’ll say for you the thing you know, but which you keep from expression. If you permit jazz music and immoral dances in your ballroom, your effect on the community is worse than that of the unspeakable creatures, who live from the scarlet earnings of women, for you are conducting a wholesale traffic in the souls of boys and girls.

ABOLISH JAZZ MUSIC

Abolish FOX-TROT, ONE-STEP, TODDLE, SHIMMY

or any form of dancing or any position which permits the gentleman to walk directly in front of his partner.

TO PARENTS, TEACHERS, WELFARE WORKERS AND PUBLIC OFFICIALS

Dancing, after motion pictures, is our most universal form of amusement. It touches virtually every family in the country.

Dancing, as it is indulged in today, is a greater menace to the welfare of our country than liquor before or after the Volstead fiasco. It is a greater menace than segregated vice and than the brothels from which much of it sprang.

Even a superficial study of public and private dances where jazz music, fox-trot, one-step, toddle, shimmy and other dances of like nature are permitted will convince any fair-minded person that many of the couples performing these dances should have a marriage license before stepping on the ballroom floor, and that if they had a marriage license there would be no excuse for committing such acts in public.

These are strong words, especially from the pen of the proprietor of a public ballroom, but I can convince any unbiased man or woman of average intelligence that they are truth.

When you are told that boys and girls of the age when sex impulses run hottest, when judgment has not been developed, when will and knowledge to combat strange and new desires are absent, and when supervision is either lacking entirely or is superficial—when you are told that youth of both sexes— can mingle in close embrace with bosoms and abdomens in friction and with limbs intertwined, and survive the experience without mental, moral and physical pollution, you know the teller LIES.

Add to this position the swaying, twisting, even wriggling of the foxtrot, toddle, camel-walk and other modern dances; add the sensual stimulation of the abominable jazz orchestra with its voodoo-born minors and its direct appeal to the sensory centers, and if you can believe youth is the same after this experience as before, then God help your child or your charge, for you are not mentally fit for your responsibility. If you are convinced such an experience is harmful and do nothing toward preventing your child or your charge from having it, you are a traitor to your responsibility. If you do not believe I have correctly described the modern dances and their effect, you either have not seen them performed or you are willfully blind to their true character.

I have consistently, sincerely, and energetically fought jazz music and immoral dancing. I have fought them to protect your child and your charge. The fight has been growing harder everyday. Now it is time for YOU to wake up to your responsibility. It is time for you to quit talking, quit making excuses, quit putting off, and quit SHOVING YOUR SHARE OF THE BURDEN ON THE SHOULDERS OF THE PROPRIETORS OF PUBLIC AMUSEMENT PLACES.

ABOLISH JAZZ MUSIC, abolish FOX-TROT, ONE-STEP, TODDLE, SHIMMY

or any form of dancing or any position which permits the gentleman to walk directly in front of his partner.
